Sidney's first soccer season with a goalie on the field made scoring much more difficult. Playing offense with the sole intent to score, he came close many times, but fate had it otherwise. One particular game, Sid managed to escape from the defenders and shoot the ball from mid-field. With no keeper in the way, the ball was headed directly for the goal, but rolled to a stop ON the goal line. No goals for Sid. What a bummer...
His defense, on the other hand... watch out. A tall, lengthy 2nd grader on the opposing team was dominating the field, scoring at will. Tweet...subs in. Sidney enters the field with goalie gloves up to his elbows, ready to stop this "BIG kid" who, right away, begins one of his breakaways. He powerfully kicks the ball, darting like a bullet straight towards Sidney's face. Mom, on the sideline, already imagining the worst shiner ever. On impact, Sidney's head tilts backwards as if he had received a punch. However, he manages to stay on both feet as the ball bounces back toward The Kid who is surprised to see his attempt rejected. They both run towards the ball. As The Kid attempts another kick, Sidney dove and covers the ball with his entire body. Intentional or not, it was quite a save...Keep up the great effort, Sid!
Fall Soccer season |
Colin was required to make a few adjustments this season, as well. The field size grew and off-sides was no longer acceptable. Needless to say, the first game had several whistle blows. Although, Laura and I were concerned for Colin, this new rule did not seem to affect him. After two off-side calls, Colin quickly learned he could still position himself deeply, just not deeper than the last defender. Colin had a great season and managed to score 17 goals in 7 games.
Easily distracted in everyday life, Colin's competitiveness fuels his concentration during soccer games.
